VALEDICTORY.

CAPTAIN LINDSAY FAB SWELLED. On Monday evening Captain L. J. Lindsay, who has been in charge of the local Salvation Army Corps for the past eighteen months, was tendered a farewell social in the Salvation Army Hall. There was a large attendance of townsfolk, which testified to the popularity of the Captain. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton), presided over the gathering, and associated with him on the platform were Captain Lind-ay and Mr it'. Hales, treasurer of the local corps. Apologies for absence were received from Mr W. D. Warren and Mr and Mrs T. Davidson.

In his opening remarks, the chairman, on behalf of the citizens of Queenstown, said that it was with feelings of deep regret that they had met to say farewell to a very popular officer —probably the most popular officer who had ever been stationed in Queenstown. While they regretted the fact that he was going away they, however, offered congratulations to him on his promotion to the charge of the corps at Island Bay, Wellington. During his sojourn in Queenstown Captain Lindsay had endeared himself to old and young alike —he had worked with energy and enthusiasm. His cheerful personality and unfailing sympathy had won for him many friends, and lie- would leave a gap which would be hard to fill. His Worship concluded by wishing him every success in his new sphere of duties. The Bov. j. N. Goodman spoke in eulogistic terms of the departing guest, on behalf of St. Peter’s Church of England, and the Bev. D. K. Boyd, on behalf of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Mr W. Hales spoke on behalf of the local Salvation Army Corps, and Dr. Anderson, lion. Child Welfare Officer in Queenstown, referred to his association with Capt. Lindsay in this capacity, stressing the fact of his willingness at all times to help the- children, especially if they were in distress.

lii reply, Captain Lindsay thanked the chairman and other speakers for their remarks. His work in Queenstown had been a pleasure, and he had made many friends, whom lie regretted leaving. He thanked the Lev. Goodman and Lev. Boyd for their Loyal co-operation at all times, and spoke feelingly of the fellowship between the churches here. He paid a special tribute to Mr W. Hales for his loyalty at all times, which had been a great help to him. In con-' elusion, he expressed his gratitude to the organisers of the social and all who had helped. During the evening, a most enenjoyablc musical programme was given, the following contributing items: —Pianoforte duet, Miss J. Moffat and Mrs Buncombe; recitation, 'Gennor Eobinson; violin solo, Miss Rene Hales; vocal duet, Masters Stanley Wilkinson and David Herbert; vocal solo, .Miss Jean Moffat; musical monologue, Miss Esther Percy; vocal duet, Mrs H. Davies and Miss Eva Davies. Miss Jean Moffat and Mrs Duncorabe were the accompanists. After the pronouncing of the benediction a very dainty supper was handed round.

Lieut. D. Sampson will be in charge of the local corps in the meantime, assisted by his brother, Cadet Sampson.

Prior to the farewell social, two children were dedicated to God and the Army by Captain Lindsay.
