LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mr J. R. Benson, 8.D.5., surgeon demist, intimates to Arrow and district people that he will visit Arrowtown on Tuesday next, 3rd August. Appointments may be made at the Royal Oak Hotel. Watch for future announcements. The Arrow Tennis Club's “500’"’ card evening and dance, held in, the Atheneum Hall on Wednesday, was largely attended. The prizes for “500’’ were .won by Miss Feebly and Mr O. Feebly. After supper, provided by the ladies, dancing was indulged in.

A special meeting of members of the Arrow Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Council Chambers, Arrowtown, on Tuesday evening last, Mr Robert .Scott presiding over a good attendance. Messrs W. H. Thompson and W. P. Saunders, charman and secretary, respectively, of the district branch of the Farmers’ Union, were also present. The principal business was the election of three representatives to attend the Educational Week in Dunedin, commencing on August 9th. The following were elected: — H. Perriam, Robert Scott, and William Shaw.

The dance, in aid of the piano fund, held in the Gibbston schoolhouse on Friday evening, 16th inst., was well attended, and proved most enjoyable. The music was supplied by Mists Cowan and Mr T. Hand, while the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr Alex. Miller. The next dance w r ill be held on Friday evening next, commencing at 7.15. The “working bee” held at Mr R. R. Shows ’farm, Arrow Junction, on Saturday last was well attended by members of the local Rifle Club, when good work was done in preparing the Club’s new butts.

“America has done more for the World than any other Nation,” remarked a speaker at a farewell dinner at Auckland to a well-known American, “She has given us tobacco.” (Loud and prolonged applause). Yes, smokers everywhere owe a debt of 'gratitude to Uncle Sam; they never 'can repay for the priceless gift which has done so much to render existence happier and life better worth living. Nor must the credit due to those who have .devised better methods of tobaocco culture and superior methods of manufacture, be forgotten. Andiu this connection the name of the National Tobacco Company, Ltd., of Napier, stands out prominently for their toasting process (exclusively their own) not only vastly improves flavour and aroma but makes their tobacco safe for even the inveterate smoker. Hence the ever increasing demand for the famous toasted blends, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy 'Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverbead Gold and Desert Gold. No finer tobaccos than these are produced. They never vary in quality and are the only genuine toasted blends manufactured.
