THE MACETOWN ROAD.

CONSTRUCTION WORK FINANCIALLY DIFFICULT. When the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, visited Arrowtown in February last, the matter of improvements to the Macetown road was brought under his notice by Mr James Anderson, chairman of the local Labour Party. Mr Semple informed Air Anderson that it had been decided to have a survey made of about one mile on the Arrowtown end of the road. This survey was recently carried out, and the following letter from the Under-Secre-tary, Public Works Department, has been received by Mr W. Hannah, secretary Labour Party, Arrowtown: “With reference to the correspondence . which you had with the Hon. Minister of Public Works in connection with the Arrow River Gorge section of Macetown road, I have been directed by the Minister to infjorm you that as a result of representations made to him at Queenstown on 19th February it was arranged to have a full engineering survey made over this length of the proposed road. As a result pf the information thus obtained, the Hon. Minister regrets that the position is so difficult financially that he will be unable to give favourable consideration to any question of construction, work.”
