The postal referendum in regard to the Southland Power Supply # resulted in an overwhelming majority in favour of State control as against retention of the scheme by the present authority, the Southland Electric Power Board. The voting was as follows: For Government control, 7993; for retention of scheme by Board, 2748; informal, 982. CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS'. At Los Angeles Lawn Tennis Tournament, Budge. United States, defeated Perry, England, and won the Pacific South West Tournament. JAPANESE DESIGNS ON CHINA. It is reported Japan has presented far reaching demands on China, including autonomy for five northern provinces. China has intimated that the proposals arc not acceptable.

{From Our Correspondent.) Glcnorcliy, 25th Sept. W.D.F.U. Mrs K. Scott presided at the monthly meeting of the W.D.P.U. held at Glenorchy on Friday, 18th inst. Proceeding.s opened with the readingof the Creed, after which correspondence was discussed. It was agreed to give a donation of £1 is to the Leper Fund. A debate, “Should Husbands help in the House,” proved both interesting and amusing. Mesdames J. A. Reid and R. Hume spoke for the affirmative and Mesdames K. Scott and B. Sharpe for the negative. _ Several members also voiced their opinions on the subject which proved conclusively that the ‘‘Yeas” were the winners. “My most Disliked Household Duty” was the roll-call. Delicious afternoontea was served by Mrs S. C. Knowles. Sheepowuers’ Federation. On Monday afternoon a meeting of members of "the Shcepowners’ Federation and others interested was held at Glenorchy. Mr T. E. Bryant presided and introduced Mr J. Mackenzie, Walter Peak, who gave a resume of proceedings at the recent conference of the Shcepowners’ Federation held at Wellington, at which he was a delegate. On the motion of Mr D. Scott a hearty vote of thanks _ was accorded Mr Mackenzie for his interesting address.
