HEAD OF LAKE.

{From Our Correspondent.) Weather. The jpast month has been one of variable weather, mostly unpleasant. High winds, snow, hail and heavy rain have all been experienced, and sunny, spring days have been conspicuous by their absence. Farm work has been considerably retarded by continual wet weather. A few

early lambs have wmade their appearance, but farmers no doubt are hoping for better weather conditions before the general lambing commences. Valedictory. Prior to her leaving Rees- Valley school to take up duties at Gibbston, Miss ‘A. W. Arnolt was entertained at a social evening in the school on the 19th ult. .when a large number of friends and well-wishers assembled to bid her farewell. In presenting her with a dressing case, Mrs J. E. Reid expressed regret at Miss

Arnott's departure ’ from the district, where, during her sojourn, she had iaken an active interest in all social functions; she wished her all success in her new sphere. Mj>s .Arnett briefly responded. A charming bouquet of freosias, narcissi and ferns was also presented to the guest of the evening. Songs were contributed by Miss J. Sharpe and Mr J. Crag. The evening was pleasantly spent in dancing, cards and games and a cleverly acted charade caused much amusement. A “Kitchen” competition was won by Miss Symonds and a Lucky Spot dance by Miss Rickaby and P. Scott. Mr R. Gilson was the winner of the charade. Soc'al Evening. Another social evening was held in Glenorchy Hall on 29th ult. when Mr and Mrs J. B. Summers were the guests of honour. Mr D. K. Unfortunately, the weather behaved very badly and and second spell of the game was played in heavy rain. ably controlled the game. The (Queenstown players were the of the Glenorchy Basketball Club at luncheon, and were entertained at a (dance in Glenorchy Hall in the evening. At an interval Mr R. The work of erecting the new wharf at Glenorchy is now in progress, the site being .some distance south of the present wharf. The stone building, a very, old landmark, situated near the local store, has been partly demolished and the stones used to build walls for the new wharf. This old building was used as a wool shed in the early days when the late Mr Buteman owned practically all the Head of the Lake. It also served as a dance hall at that time, and the story is told of an occasion, when the services of an accordeon player were requisitioned to supply music for a dance. He, however, was dismast to find that when watching the dancers he was quite “off his beat. The organisers overcame this difficulty by shutting the musician in the woolpress, where,' with nothing to distract his eye. and fortified with liberal liquid refreshments, he played cheerfully till daylight. Personal. Her many friends will be pleased to know that Mrs D. K. Knowles, who is at present in .hospital, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.
