HEAD OF LAKE.
(From Our Own Cot-respondent). Glenorchy, May 27. SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. Although only a small community, the Head of Lake folk were most enthusiastic in their celebration pf the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty the King; and despite rather inclement weather the entertainments arranged by Mr Geo. Reid and his committee were thoroughly enjoyed. The celebrations commenced with a procession healed by relurrel soldiers and school children, followed by decorated vehicles and geneoal public, who marched from Fallen Soldiers’ monument to the recreation ground, where games were organised for the children, each child received fruit, sweets and a flag. Prominent in the procession were two horses, "George” and "■Queen” (belonging to Mrs K. Scott(). This pair, gaily decorated, with red, white and blue ribbons, were also celebrating their silver jubilee. Although in the ‘sere and yellow Leaf’ they can-led their years remarkably well!;, and conducted themselves with a decorum befitting their royal names. The fair equestrienne, who followed, clad in immaculate riding attire, would have graced Rotten Row in the nineties.
At 5 p.m. the children sat down to a sumptuous tea. provided by the ladies in Glenorchy garage. Before partaking of this "God Save the King” and the Doxology were sung, and Mr Geo. Reid appropriately addressed the children. At dark all adjourned to the lake shore where ,a huge bonfire was lit. There the crowd danced and sang while the fire burned merrily. Ifi
The dance which followed concluded a happy and memorable day. The children’s flags were, donated by the local branch of the AV.D.FU .A word of praise is due to Mr and Mrs F. Lees. Miss Watherston, Mr T. Kennett, and' their helpers who so capably attended to tea and supper ar’range meats. WOMEN’S DIVISION FARMERS’ UNION. At the monthly meeting of the W.D. F.U., held on May 9, Mrs K. Scott, presided over a good attendance of members. Several visitors were also present. The roll cal "Quotations from a Favourite Author,” included an interesting variety of writers and. their books.
An amusing competition arranged by Mrs J. E. Reid, was won by Miss E. Bryant. A pretty bed jacket and socks knitted and donated by the president. Mrs K. Scott, were won in a guessing competition by Mrs F. Fraser, Balfour. .A most successful “Bring and Sale was held., the varied assortment! of cakes, jams, pickles, fruit, vegetables and poultry being quickly disposed of. A substantial sum was (realised thereby for W.D.F U funds. FOOTBALL. Football is at present one of the most absorbing topics of the day with our ‘‘young bloods.” After a lapse of several years the. sport has bean revived with much much enthusiasm, and vigour. So far the team has put up a very creditable performance having two wins to its credit, and bright prospects for further victories. The next match between Glanorehy and Queenstown teams, which takes place at Glen ore hy on June 1, is being keenly anticipated and should prove interesting to spectators. PERSONAL. s .Mrs R. Hume and her two young sons are spending holidays, at Dunedin and Timaru. Mr and Mrs D. Knowles are visiting 'Dunedin. Messrs H. and T. Bryant and Misises Bryant recently returned from a motoring tour in Southland and Otago. Mrs Hopgood, Christchurch, has been the guest of Mrs C. Ivoob. Mr and Mrs C. Sloper and their soil left last week for Timaru where they intend to spend the winter. Miss Alma Cronin lias returned from Mabel Bush. Mr A. G. Reid has been spending a holiday in Dunedin. Mrs Geo. Reid recently spent a few davs in Queenstown. Mrs MoFelin is the /guest of her daughter, Mrs 8. C. Knowles. Mrs T. Ken nett and her sons spent the term holidays at Lower Shotover.
