A PREMATURE REPORT

WELLINGTON, April 27. A Gisborne Press Association message, published on Satnnrday. credited the Government with having decided, m its effort to assist the 31atakaoa County Council, which is in serious financial difficulties, that it would finance the overseas interest of the county. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. A. Hamilton) stated to-day that no such decision had been reached by the Government. “ The representatives of the 3latakaoa County Council, said 31 1* Hamilton, ” were in Wellington recently to discuss the council’s unfortunate*'position, and they were in close consultation with myself and the departmental officers. The position of the council was thoroughly analysed, and certain remedial measures arc at present under considertion. but no decision on any of five major points raised lias vet been reached.”
