LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The rainfall for the month of April, as recorded by Miss Hamilton, Arruwtown, was as follows:—Rainfall for the month, 312 points; days on which rain fell, 13; maximum fall, 10(3 points on the 22nd. The rainfall for April last year was 203 points for '7 days. Mi* W. H. Thompson, of “Koyalburn,” Crown Terrace, announces that he is a candidate for Arrow Hiding at the forthcoming Lake County Council election. At the annual meeting of the Arrow Basket Ball Club Mrs Douglas was re-elected president. The election ol secretary was held over, as last year’s secretary (Miss Alice Milne) is at present absent from the district. Mrs Douglas and Miss Rosa Shaw were appointed delegates to the District Association. “I put it to you,” said Counsel for plaintiff to defendant in a judgment summons case heard at a .Northern Court recently, “if you had not been a smoker for 50 years, as you say you have ,you’d have been better off than you are?” Defendant smiled. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too, mister,” he replied. “-My pipe has been worth a lot more to cme than the bit of money I’d have saved if I'd not been a smoker.” “But,” urged Counsel, “you'd not only have saved money, you’d have enjoyed better health!” “Don’t you worry about Iny health,” sneered defendant. “I’m in the pink Smoking don’t hurt me. Been smoking toasted New Zealand tobacco for years. The toasted works the nicotine out of it. It’s the finest tobacco in the world.” Counsel gave it up as a bad job! Defendant referred to the four famous brands: Riverhead Cold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Out Plug Nio. 10. These are the only toasted tobaccos manufactured, and their delicious flavour and delightful aroma appeal to all smokers.
