BOWLING.

? TOURNAMENT AT QUEENSTOWN. The usual Xmas howling tourna- 1 meats have attracted an uupreoediemt-1 edly large number of howlers to j Queenstown. The majority are regular faces. Dunedin and Invercargill clubs laces, Duneain and Invercargill clubs are fully represented and there are howlers from other centres including Oamaru, Mataura and Kaitangata. Among the number are D. Camphell, twice champion of Otago and once in Southland. F. Lambeth, ex-N Z. champion, and W. Thorn, a prominent ■Southland howler. Heavy rain fell on Xmas morning and the Xmas Day tourney had to he abandoned. The weather was very fine on Boxing Day with the result that there was a full rink of players, Of in all. Several had to stand down. The green Wasi in excellent order although somewhat heavy in i the morning . The standard of play : was of a very high order and some close finishes resulted. W. Thorn’s rink was the winner for the day. In the absence of Mr Jas. Bennie, who usually organises these tournaments, and who is much missed this year. Mr Jas. In the semi-final Coull 10 beat Lambeth 2 and in the final Coull 7 beat Taylor 2.

Oa Monday, 28th December, tho second tournament -was played in glorious weather. The ilgreen was somewhat heavy in the morning, due to Sunday's rain, but it livened up considerably in the afternoon. GARDINER CUP

OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND

Til 6 annual competition for the Gardiner Cup took place on Wednesday, 30th December. The competition was conlincd to 7 rinks aside, and 25 heads were played. The weather was excellent and the green was running much taster than in the tournaments. Southland, on paper, looked the stronger side, but the results proved the reverse of this. For the third time in succession Otago annexed the Cup l —this year by a margin of 29 points. The competition was remarkable for some well-built heads. Prior to the commencement of the match Mr Jas, Nisbet, the Otago selector, spoke in appreciative terms of the late Mr W. J. llogers, who had been president of Wakatipu Club for the previous 2 years. Aas a token of sympathy he asked the bowlers to stand for a moment in silence.

At the conclusion of the match Mr W. D. Warren, president of the Wakatip'u Bowling Club, formally handed over the cup to the Otago bowlers, at the same time oil'e,ring his congratulations to the winners. Mr Warren remarked on the line spirit in which the game was played. He thanked Mr Nisbet tor his kindly reference to the late Mr .Rogers and for the vote of sympathy. The weather was •somewhat threatening in the. morning and a tricky wind blow across the gt ecu during the day. However, the touinament was completed in good time. Sixteen rinks competed—a full green. The winner was Geo. Ad-cos, who met strong competition in Menzies’ and Loyd’s rinks in Hie concluding rounds. He was only one up- in both games. With 2 down and one bowl to play he drew a magnificent shot and lay right against the kitty. Loyd had the last" bowl, but ho failed to alter the head. The following are the details. :

Bennie had performed his duty. His mantle nad this year fallen on the shoulders of Messrs Nisbet and Scandrett and visiting bo wlers would agree with him that they had not alone carried out their duties with much satisfaction but had denied themselves participation in many of the games in the performance of their task. Invercargill (Aylmg, Curie, Mansou and Wesney (>s) defeated Dunedin (Harraway, Campbell, Shepherd and Devereux \s) by 26 to 25. after a keen coustest. Bowieus quartered on the Eastern and A estern terraces of the town challenged as follows: — Western Terrace: (J. Melville, O. Curie, Abel, J. Munson (s)) were Deafen by Austin, Omand, J. Nisbet, F. Lambeth (s), 21—16. Yet another contest, Southland v Otago, saw the following lighting for their respective provinces: Southland (Nmhcison, Manson, W. Thorn, D. Wesney (s) defeated Otago (A. Melville, Campbell, CfouMl Lambeth (s) 26—19.
