The news that a road bridge is to be constructed near the famous Forth bridge recalls an amusing wartime yarn. An American destroyer, under orders to attach itself to Rosyth naval base, was instructed to cast anchor at the Forth bridge and await furher orders. The commander, however, sailed under he bridge, whereupon a British destroyer immediately proceeded to intercept its further passage. “ You were told to stop at the Forth bridge, weren t you?” demanded he commander of the British vessel. “Sure,” answered his American vis-a-vis blandly, “but this is onlv the first bridge.”
