LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A start was made last week with the preliminary work in connection with the erection of the new hall. Our readers are reminded that the children’s fancy dress dance in aid of the local Convent School will be held in the Garrison Hall on Friday evening next. A large number of children from the two local schools ha\ e been attending the classes in preparation for the event, and no doubt patrons will derive much, pleasure and amusement in watching the little ones go through the evolutions of the grand march and a variety of dances. The children are to have two Hours* dancing; after which, tlie adults will carry on. Good music will be supplied and supper provided. In a cricket match on Saturday, 17th Inst., Cardrona successfully defended the Burnett Shield against a team from the Hawea Club. The scores were: Cardrona 85 (J. Souu 25), Hawea 59 (A. Allison .32). A euchre tournament and dance, under the auspices of the Basket Ball Club, was held in Mrs Johnstone Hall on Wednesday evening last, when there was a large attendance 1 . The euchre prizes were won by Mrs , W'. Dakers (Ladies) and Mr J. Peterson (gents), the consolation prizes being awarded to Mrs M. Johuston , and Master A. Dakers. Tlie music for the dance was supplied by the Arrowtow n Troubadours, a recently-formed orchestra, consisting of Messrs Reg. Homans. (piano), B. L. Scheib (saxophone) and W. Warring, junr. (effects). At the beginning the players suffered from nervousness, but as the evening advanced they appeared to gain more confidence, and favourable comments were passed by the dancers on the initial effort of the combination. Extras were played by Misses Paterson, W r ilcox, Peterson, Jackways (2) and Thompson . and Mr Geer. Mr Percy Johnston earned out the duties of M.C. The prizes in a Monte Carlo waltz were won by Miss Thurza W arid ng and Mr Reg Romans and the Lucky Spot waltz by Miss Bella Wilcox and Mr R. Jenkins. Supper was provided by the members of the Basket Ball Club.
The last return from the Golden Progress mine (Oturehua) was 272 ounces of retorted gold from 15b tons of quartz, the time occupied being four weeks. . Although he strongly condemns smoking to excess, Dr. Alexander, Medical Officer of Popular (London), admits that smoking has ite virtues, and is “a powerful germicide.” He instances the case of a big cigar factory at Hamburg at which, during an epidemic, not a single workman was attacked by the disease. Hated and abused by its enemies, nothing can really be proved against tobacco save that the imported brands too of tie n contain an excess of nicotine. However, as far as Hew Zealanders are concerned that needn’t worry them, because our choice New Zealand tobaccos are all toasted, and the toasting extracts the nicotine in double quick time, leaving the weed so sweat, pure and fragrant, that it has an irresistible appeal for smokers everywhere. Toasted tobacco cannot do anyone any harm. There are only four brands —Eiverhead Gold, Cavendish, Navy Cut No. 3 and Cut Plug No. 10. Buyers should make a note of this because the success’ of the toasted tobaccos is bringing out imitations.
