OBITUARY.

DONALD MACLEOD; Aged 62,

The news of the death at Auckland on Thursday of Mr Donald Macleod, proprietor erstwhile of the Lake County Press, Arrowtown, was received with deep regret hy the people of this district. When Mr Macleod left Arrowtown in August, 1929, a year after the destruction by fire of tjhe Ltvke County Press office, he appeared He be in robust health. About twelve months ago, however, he underwent an operation in Auckland for throat trouble. Unhappily this did not. prove effective, and other operations were found necessary, but the sufferer eventually succumbed to the complaint. Mr Macleod, who was 62 years of age, was born at Palmerston Souths Otago. He received his primary education there and then attended the Otago Boys’ High School. Entering the service of the Colonial Bank, he was eventually taken over by the Bank of N.Z. when the amalgamation of the two institutions was effected. Subsequently he resigned from the bank and later assumed the conduct of the Palmerston and Waikouaiti Times. In 1913 Mr Macleod purchased the Lake County Press, Arrowtown from Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, and carried on that journal until the office was destroyed by fire. The goodwill of the business was sdid to the Lake Wakatip Mail proprietary and Mr Macleod left Arrowtown. The following year he went to Auckland, where he was visiting two married sisters. During Mr Macleod’iS residence in Arrowtown he had an interest with his brother, Mr Wm. Macleod, in a sheep run at Gibbston. Mr Macleod was a prominent member of the Lake County A. and Society, the Arrow Tennis Club and other sports bodies. He was also a director of the Lake County Coop. Dairy Co., Ltd., and was closely associated with Great War activities in the district. Every movement affecting the welfare of Lake County found in him a warm supporter. Air Macleod was a man of high integrity; while his cheery nature and social attributes made him a great favourite with young and old. His death will be mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Air Macleod was unmarried. The funeral takes place at Palmerston on Thursday (next at 3 jp.m.
