QUEENSTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was held in the Library on Thursday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (W. H. Overton, Esq.), Crs. J. Cockburn, D. F. Murchison, A. McCaughan, A. Scheib, T. H. Tallontire, F. Gavin;, and E. J. Loweii. ! The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed, and precis of outward correspondence was approved. Inward Correspondence. H. 0. Barker wrote expressing satisfaction that his services in ; connection with the meteorological station wore appreciated by the Council—Received. The Assistant Commissioner of Stamp Duties wrote giving particulars asked re amusements tax. —-Received. R. D. Ncwth, District Public Trustee, Invercargill, wrote setting outparticulars regarding withdrawals, etc., in connection with the Hydro-electric depreciation fund, of which the Public Trustee had been appointed Oommis- , sioner.— Resolution passed appointing Public Trustee Commissioner_,eic. 1 F. Varney, Health Inspector, Alexandra, wrote returning plans ami specifications relative to sanitary and drainage work at Mrs George Chalmers new property. Received. Mi Varney also forwarded his periodical report on Borough inspection.
The Minister of Public Works wrote acknowledging the Council’s application for a subsidy of £2 for £1 on the sum of £45 (including £32 on wages) j expended on tree-planting on the Peninsula. A report was being obtained from the district engineer at i Dunedin. —A copy of a wire sent the I Minister by Mr Ball, district engineer, ' was also read, this making 'favourable recommendations; also covering letters from Mr Bodkin. M.P.,—Minister to be wired to for authority, as phuihing season nearly over. Mr Bodkin to 1 be thanked for his representations. Adam Hume, Glenorchy, reported that the building of groins on Dart River and Priory lease had been ; finished to his satisfaction. 'He had i also had a lot of willows planted below the groins. Writer had put a ! man and team on himself in carting ' material, which helped to reduce I the cost considerably. He invited the Council to, inspect the work. —-Mr Hume to be thanked. W. 1). Warten, secretary, Lake Lodge of Opbir, formally advised the Council that Mr T. 0. .Stroud was erecting a house on the section ad- , joining the lodge, the location of ■ which was in contravention of the 1 Borough building by-laws, which sot out that a house must be at least oft away from the dividing line. Mr Stroud had been acquainted of the irregularity, and as the result ol a consultation between the parties an arrangement had been come to which was agreeable to both.—Resolved that
in future ground plan must be included in application for building permits. Mrs C. Pliilp advised that she was putting drains in her property.— Applicant to be advised that she must submit plan of drainage as this was required for the Health Inspector. The Trustees, Executors and Agency Co., Dunedin, forwarded statement of receipts and investments for the half year to 15.8.30. —Received. John Preston, Waikouain, invited the Council to, be represented at a meeting of local bodies in Main Highways districts, No. 1G and 17, on '30.9.30 to consider the appointment of group traffic inspectors, etc.-de-ceived. Thos. Ball, M. H. Board’s represen,I lativc on the District Highways 1 Council, forwarded a copy ol the Main I Highways Estimates for 1930-31. the ‘ Invercargill Committee of the Cancer Research Campaign advised that full particulars of the campaign had been forwarded to Di. A nderson. —Received. The General Manager, State- Fire ana Accident Insurance Office, Rewarded policy covering memoers ol the brigade "in respect 'of accident whilst engaged on lire duty. Members would be deemed to be workeis within the meaning of the ‘Workers Compensation Act, 192(>. J. J. Mcßride, district agent Public Trust, wrote, in re grave plot in which the ashes of C. J. Brooke were interred. —Received. , ’
J. E. Weavers, Pembroke, applied lor a lease of the Garrison Hall for the purpose of conducting a skating rink, showing pictures, and dancing. Period: G months, with right o! renewal. —Declined on the motion ol Crs Gavin and Tallentire. J. Edgar applied for a longer time in which to shift his office. Pie considered he should have got at least i 12 months’ notice, seeing how long he had been leasing it.—Notice already given to be adhered to. j. Edgar also applied for a lease of the- nrner of the Conveniences section where the garden at ..present was.—Declined. John Haines wrote asking lor a stand for his office at the corner of Hr Monson’s section near the conveniences. It seemed impossible- to conduct bis business unless be bad some place to store his pleasure boats I gear. Writer also asked for lonj ger time in which to remove bis I office— Notice a 1 ready given to be I adhered to. Lighting Committee’s Report. Cr.
