FALLEN SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the committee of above was held in the Mail office, Arrowtown, on Friday evening, 25th ult. Present: Mr James Shaw (chairman), Mesdames E. Wilcox and Dougfas, Messrs J. Jenkins, M. Elliott, J. Fletcher, J. Dalrymple, and G. H. Eoraans (hon.secretary). The secretary reported that the collectors at the Anzac Day service had realised £4 10s 6d. After paying £3 10s for cutting paths on Soldiers’ Hill, there was a credit balance in the bank of £2O 3s 7d. The chairman said the meeting had been called for the purpose of considering the question of planting shrubs, flowers, etc., on Soldiers Hill. It would be necessary first to clear the Hill of noxious weeds, and to have the water laid on before any planting be done. Mr Dalrymple gave some suggestions as to- the most suitable ornamental shrubs and flowers. After discussion ,the Chairman and Messrs Fletcher and Jenkins were appointed a sub-committee to ascertain the cost of piping.—At a subsequent meeting ,held on the 4th ins't., the chairman reported that 279 ft of piping, stand pipes, and bends would cost £6 3s.—lt was decided that the pipes be., procured ,the matter of laying same being left in the hands of the .üb-committee. Mi-s Douglas suggested making enquiries regarding an evergreen creeping plant for the face of Soldiers’ Hill. — The secretary was instructed to do this, also to write for quotations for suitable shrubs.
