OPINION ON NEW ZEALAND.

“God's Own Country,” as our fair land has been termed, has had its praises sung- in a loud key by Mr W. H. Harland, of the firm of Messrs W. Harland and Co., England, who recently toured the world and included New' Zealand in his itinerary. The visitor was greatly impressed with the. wonderful climate, scenery and resources of the Dominion, and in the Hull Daily Mail appears some contributions, calculated to bring this country prominently before the people of the Mother Land. He paints a vivid pen picture of the glories of New Zealand, which make interesting reading. Mr Harland says“We shall bring away from this island the most pleasant recollections, not only because of the beautiful scenery, with, its wealth of ferns and other luxurious foliage, but also because of the hospitality that is extended to anyone from the Home Country. There seems to be nothing but prosperity av her ever you go, (and one thing that is noticeable, I have never bteien asked for alms the whole time I have been in the Colonies. lam told that there, is work for everybody who is willing to work, land the country is only wanting more capital and labour of the right kind to prosper more than it is doing. The district we are in justnow, called Hawke® Hay, is wonderfully prolific. They grow fruit, gnapeis tobacco leaf, and even now, in their “winter," after the train they have had following a drought the grass is as green as iwe .see it in May in Yorkshire. The cattle and sheep are a very fine healthy breed, produced, by British prize stock, which they are always importing. The press in my opinion is good—and especially in the larger towns, like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. lam told that the men at the head of all the newspapers in New Zealand are Britishers. It is- the same in the big stores in this country and also In Australia. They have broader view's and knowledge, (especially of European affairs and goods . It is gratifying to know this and I wisli It applied to the motor industry. The British motor car manufacturers are not supplying the right machines, and 1 , as tine New r Zealander wants to buy from the. Home, country, he finds a better article supplied by America. One rarely sees ia British car, barring the. Morris, which is getting popular. It is always Buicks, New Hudsons, Overlands, Wilys Knights., and Dodges. The import figures of oars are worth studying."
