Lake Wakatip Mail. QUEENSTOWN, TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 1915

Harvest Thanksgiving services will be held in St. Peter's Church on Sunday next. We would remind the public of the social and dance to be held in the Lower Shot over School on Thursday evening next in aid of funds for Belgian Relief. Apart from the worthy cause which the residents have taken in hand, our country friends invariably give their patronage "to social events in the towns so that it is not too much to say that it behoves the denizens of the " city " to show them some favor in return. The services in all the Churches were very well attended during Eastertide. Special de orations were in evidence on Sunday and the services, as usual, t\ ere festal in character. Three members of the Ist expeditionary force just returned from Samoa have been in Queenstown during the holidays. Two of these are old Queenstown or Wakatipu district boys, Messrs A. E. Aldridge (son of Mrs A. Mayne) and Mr E. J. Quinn, Arrow, the former being attached to the Medical Corps and the latter a member of the Railway Engineers. The third is Mr A. G. Cockroft, who was at one time in the local railway office Mr Isidore de Beei second son of the late L de Beer, a leading merchant in the earlier days of Queenstown, is at present on a visit to the town. Mr de Beer occupies a responsible position in the Dunedin branch of the Bristol Piano Co.

On Sunday evening last the rowing teams from the Waitaki, Invercargill Railway and Otago sheds banded themselves together in the project of raising funds for Belgian Relief. Attractively attired and equipped with various household articles from which they endeavored to prodace sounds musical and otherwise—but rather otherwise—they paraded the principal streets and, through the medium of an oarsman of distinctly persuasive tongue, influenced the onlookers to pay for their credit's sakes to the tune of some eight guineas. This sum included a certain amount which was realised by the sale of fruit and other commodities.

The men of the platoon B Coy., Queens town, will leave Queenstown for the Oamaru Camp on Monday next, 13th inst. All men who have arms or equipment in the Garrison Hall are particularly requested to obtain same from Q.M.-Sergeant S. Jones or Sergt. J McNeill, as the officer commanding will not be responsible tor any left behind.

A very old resident in the person of Mr Peterson, late of Kawarau Falls, Frankton, passed away at the Wakatipu Hospital on Sunday last. Deceased had been more or

less ailing for some years past and was in the hospital for five or six weeks prior to his demise. Ho had reached the ripe age of 86 yerrs, was a native of Rotterdam, Holland, and came to the district in the early days. He engaged in mining at the 12- and L's- miles, Lake Wakatipu, Moke <reek, and the Shotover. He subsequently uiggingand settled at Frank<j\ ..iiere he fulfilled the duties of punt caretaker to the Lake County Council for !)5 >ears. Deceased lived in Queonstown lor the last 18 months. He was greatly iespected in the district, and much sympathy is felt for his aged widow. ]'he funeral took place to-day, the remains beincr interred in the local cemetery. Revt Futlier O'Donnell conducted the ceremonies at the grave.

The social and dance held last evening in the Garrison Hall, under the auspices of St. Joseph's Church was an uncommonly great success. The town and district were well represented but there was a very great preponderance of visitors present. This infused much spirit into the dance and made the function a highly interesting and enjoyable one. The music for the first portion of the programme was supplied by Miss McCarthy (piano) and Mr J. Fraser (violin). Miss Gudgeon presided at the piano during the latter half of the programme, whilst extras were played by various other ladies and gentlemen Mr J. McMullan acted as M.C. The supper arrangements were in the hands of a capable body of workers headed by Mrs Gudgeon. At intervals during the evening, songs and recitations were given by visiting gentlemen. A Doubles Bowling match took place on the Park Green yesterday for trophies kindly presented by Mr Van Paine. The match was an open one and there were eight entries, embracing sixteen players. It ended in favor of Messrs Jenkins and Courtes (s) who narrowly defeated Capt. Robertson and M. J. Gavin (s) by one print. The competition was keenly enj oyad by all participants. Some 590 persons arrived in Queenstown on Thursday and Friday night last for the Laster Holidays and Queenstown regatta 486 persons took advantage of the special day excursion on Saturday last from Invercargill and intermediate places.
