MEETING OF LOCAL EADIES
On Friday la-t ihe Mayoress, Mrs I). F. Su! hci la ml, received a tidegram from Lady Liverpool, asking her to convene a meeting of ladies, who would lie prepared to receive ••out ril u i ins whe'cher ill anoney (however .-mall the sums) or in kind in order to provide any necessaries which may be required for (hose portions of the citizen army which are now mobilising for the service of the Motherland in the present crisis. \eeordiingly. a meeting of ladies was held in the Council Chambers, vester-
day afternoon to take the necessary >teps to inaugurate the fund suy~este(l by Lady Liverpool. There was a very I a rye attendance and the utmost enthusiasm and unanimity prevailed. This may tx- judged by the fact, that CIS was subscribed in the room. \ cry generous donations of kind were also made by various tradespeople. It was dcided t-> make ;| lurther canvass of the town and country. A patriotic entertainment is also to be triven in the Town Hall on Thursday evening next in furtherance ot_ the object, when the programme will bo contributed to by local mu-
sieians. Mr Tomkies also having generously offered to screen sonic ]>ictures as we'l as give the ine ol the hall free. The meeting also decided to make a number of "Housewives' according to army pattern. For this purpose a guild of all ladies willing to assist in preparing material that will he required by the men o! the Expeditionary Force, will meet in St. Fetor's Farish Hall on Wednesday afternoon.
.Mrs Lee was appointed treasurer and Mrs Stewart secretary for the fund.
The Henedicts and Spinsters' Ball Committee have decided to hand over any surplus from the forthcoming ball
CHURCH SERVICES
The services in St.l'eter's church on Sunday were arranged as befitted the present crisis. Special intercessory prayers, psalms, hymns and sermon a'l ha.l hearing on the gravity ot tlie situation in Europe. In the evening the service opened with the hymn. "0 God, our Help in Ages Fast, whilst the National Anthem was smig at the close. There was a Inrire congregation and as this inchnled some professional vocalists, the music was very inspiring. The services in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church were also of an intercessory order. Spe ■: 11 hymns were also sung and the Rev. George Gibh preached a very forceful sermon on tlie war. The congregation was a very large one.

Mulholland. Bth Regiment, have also voluntee)ed. Civilians who have, applied fur enrolment are William H. Cable. James W. (rlenn. Hector Ross and Duncan Simmers,. Messrs G. I). P.a rd and Wm. Reid telegraphed to the Hon. Mr Mas-ey olieriiilt the services of one hundred mounted men from the Arrow district. for service in New Zealand or at Home.
