ALEXANDER THE GREAT.
ITEM THAT ESCAPED THE HISTORIANS.
Alexander had asked that the map of the world be brought to him. "Take a blue pencil," he commanded, "and indicate the lands I have conquered." The scriveners set to work, and presently placed the result of their labours before him.
-The terrestrial conqueror stared at
" That's not a map," he fiercely cried. " It's a brocaded blue Persian saddle cloth.
"We are but thy slaves," the scriveners declared, "and have followed to th» best of our poor ability the command thou gavest us." Alexander examined the map more
closely. " And \ have conquered all this ?" mighty master.."' "And is there nothing more to conquer ?" "Nothing, s o n of victory. The world is yours !" Alexander drew back, and great scalding tears ran down his bronzed cheeks and dripped from his Alexanlrine nose. "Why weepest thou, all powerful ?" they murmured. "Because," he sobbed, " there are no more worlds for me to conquer !" At that moment Roxana emerged from the Imperial tent. "Alick," she cried, "what on earth do you mean by loafing around with these idlers when you know the Envoys of Darius are coming to dinner and you've got to wash up !" Hastily wiping his eyes on the skirt of his tunic, the world conqueror humbly followed the boss.— "Cleveland Plain Dealer."
