(From Our Own Correspondent.) Dunedin this day. There was a large audience at the Choral Hall, Auckland, last night, the Hon. ft. Fowlds presiding, to hear Mr C. C. Reade, Editor of the 'Graphic,' lecture on the Auckland slums. One instance given was that of 14 houses occupied by 30 people, sharing one small yard, one outside tap and three conveniences. Another was that of an old, rotten, four-roomed house at the bottom of a gully with no drainage and sheltering a Chinaman, a white woman and six children including a little baby. A resolution was passed approving of legislative powers. Racing men, now in conference at Wellington, protest against the Commission's report particularly in regard to the number of days on which totalisator permits are granted. They subsequently waited on the Acting Premier who told them plainly that legislation of which they now complained was due to their own want of concerted action.
The Dunedin labor party have decided to contest the Sidey, Millar, and Thomson seats at the general election. The Hon. Fowlds throws doubt on the cable announcement that Sir W. HallJones will retire on August 31. A man and his wife named O'Shaughnessy and a Mrs Hartland were arrested at Auckland laft night on a charge of having murdered Elsie Holland on June 13.
