AN INTELLIGENT CAT.
A Canonbury man has a cat wfio insists on taking his meals in the dining-room, and cannot be induced, even when mice are about, to go downstairs into the kitchen. His gentility was humoured, and his meals were always brought to him in the dining-room. One day when, owing to a change of servants, Master Tom's dinner did not appear, he went to his mistress and mewed and made a fuss, and his mistress, understanding what he meant, went to the bell and rang it, and when the new parlourmaid appeared ordered her to bring Tom his dinner. Some days afterwards Tom was forgotten again, so he went to the mistress, caught hold of her dress, and pulled her towards the bell. The lady rang it, and Tom's dinner was the result. Now comes the remarkable part of the story. One day Tom was in the dining-room at his usual hour, and his mistress was not, bo he jumped up, seized the bell-rope with his teeth, and hung on to it till the bell rang. After that he always rang the bell for his own dinner to be brought up.
