(From Our Own Correspondent.) Dunodin this day. Sir J. (j. Ward opened the new post oliice at St. Kilda, Dunedin, last night. He confirmed the news of five years' contract between Canada and

New Zealand for the Vancouver service with Auckland as the port of call, and regretted the policy of the Commonwealth in this relation but hoped Australia would yet come in. The Premier added that the revenue surplus was the best indication of the prosperity of the Dominion. Lord Islington was entertained at Mataura ytsterday and left D.uneJin for vVellington this morning. Sir J. G. Ward received two deputations this morning and goes to Christchurch by second express.

The Auckland • Herald ' estimates that the people in that city spent £547,902 on out and indoor amusements last year. Of this amount £398,000 was spent on racing.

Several fatal accidents in addition to several serious injuries appear in to-day's papers. They extend from Auckland to Invercargill.
