The death took place at Dunedin on the 2nd inst., of a well-known resident of this city, Mr Walter S. Brydone, who succumbed to an acute attack of pneumonia. Deceased gentleman was father of Mrs J. Ross of this town. Mr J. K. Logan, 1.5.0., Superintendent of Electric Lines, severed his connection with the Public Service last Saturday and a career of 46 years in connection with the telegraphic service of New Zealand closes with his retirement on superannuation. He entered the British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company's service at Paisley, Scotland, as a lad of twelve. That was in 1856. He left for New Zealand eight years later, having in -the interval been telegraphist and officer in charge at various towns, including Glasgow and Edinburgh. Shortly after arriving in Dunedin, he assisted in erecting the wires between that city and Christchurch, and on May 25, 1865, the day communication opened with Invercargill and Christchurch, he entered the Dunedin office as assistant. Later in the same year the Otago Provincial Government made him its inspector of telegraphs. He erected and had charge of the line through the goldfields to Queenstown, and and when the General Government took over the lines (December 1869) he was appointed Inspector of the Dunedin District. His final position of Superintendent of Electric' Lines, for the whole of New Zealand, dates from January 1, 1894. He received the Imperial Service Order in June, 1909, from the late King, as a recognition of his long and distinguished record in the Public Service. Mr Logan, although he has reached the age limit, is still hale and vigorous. He carries with him into retirement the esteem and good wishes of the officers of his Department, and a large circle of friends.—' Southland Times.'

Mrs Crofts, wife of the late Joseph T. Crofts, is spending a holiday in Queenstown with her daughter, Miss Mabel Crofts.

Dominion Chief Scout Cosgrove has received a letter from General Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout movement, expressing his intention of visiting the Dominion at the end of the present year. Mr J. Orchiston, who has been electrical engineer in Dunedin, succeeds Mr J. K. Logan, 1.5.0., as superintendent of electric lines. Mr Logan recently retired on superannuation.

Staff Sergt-Major Grant, who was to have left Invercargill on Thursday last for Wellington to attend the Instruction Camp was that day prostrated by a serious illness. Iu was diagnosed as appendicitis. This was complicated by peritonitis and an abscess, and a surgical operation became necessary. The operation was performed successfully on Saturday morning, but the pajiient failed to rally and early yesterday morning he died. The Sergt.-Major was a capable officer, and withal so consistently genial and obliging that he was one of the most popular staff instructors ever stationed in Invercargill. Deceased visited and instructed the Wakatipu Mounted Rifles for several years past and became very popular with the corps. Outside volunteer circles, as well as in the service, he was universally liked, and his sudden death will be the subject of widespread and sincere regret in Southland and Otago. The illness which had so regrettable an ending was of very short duration. Sergt.-Major Grant felt perfectly well on Thursday morning and had made all arrangements for his journey to Wellington, but sudden indisposition later in the day caused him to seek medical advice.
