The first payments for the N.Z. onp have proved very satisfactory, as 51 horses still remain in the race. These are the largest that have been taken for races ior years. ' Sentinel' in the ' Witness' says : Strathfillan, owned by Mr J. J. Mcßride, will probably be sent on a visit to Buccleuch and retired from the turf after racing at some of the spring meetings. Strathfillan is a good type of mare and on breeding lines should do well at the stud. She was got by Strathbraan (AppremontEngagement) from Falka, by St. George (brother to Chester) from Melusina, by Tasnian from Naulibus, Traducer.
Under the conditions on whioh the Lake County Jockey Club hold the right to race on the Frankton reserve the revenue derived from rent has to be spent on improvements. At the present time there is something like £6O in hand and available for the purposes indicated. If the forthcoming meeting of the L.C.J.C. was to be held at Frankton instead of at Arrow the circumference of the track would have been reduced to a mile and a quarter, and other improvements effected on the course. Meantime the matter will be allowed to stand over.—' Sentinel' in the ' Otago Witness.'
