PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SALE OF WORK.

A sale of work in aid of the funds of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was conducted in the unoccupied premises on tho lower side of Messrs Price and Bulleid's drapery establishment on Friday afternoon and evening. The undertaking was quite a departure on the part of the members of this particular community, other means having hitherto been devised for the purpose of raising money for current expenses. The urgency of certain extra works requiring to be done for the improvement of the Church's property no doubt suggested the departure and it only remains to be said that it was justified by the very great success which •attended the efforts of the ladies and others who bad been working for some months towards the object. The building proved to be a most .suitable one for the sale, being commodious and well lit, and a tremendous amount of trouble had also been "gone to in the way of decoration to make it as attractive as possible. On the right hand on entering was the fancy goods stall presided over by Mrs C. C. Ware, assisted by Misses Keid, Palmer and Ware. A choice assortment of pretty and dainty things as well as useful articles was to be found in this quarter, and apparently satisfactory business was done by the ladies in question as a very small quantity of goods remained at the end of the evening. Beyond the stall was the bran tub, which was the delight of the children as usual. Misses S. McAllister and May Hamilton atteuded to this. Still further on was the art gallery in charge of Misses Boyes and Alexander, who beguiled the majority of those present into their corner at some time or other during the day. Immediately beside the doorway on the left hand side were the produce and lolly tables, departments of Misses L. Geisow and J. Dagg respectively, who seemed to meet with their share of success. The plain goods stall contained a very large quantity of work chiefly in the shape of ladies' and children's wearing apparel. As will be understood, heavy sales were effected of these during the sale and some of the articles remaining were disposed of by Dutch auction at its close. Meadames Jas. Wilson and T. I. Milnes presided at this stall, with the assistance of Miss Ceisow. A good deal of ingenuity had been exercised in the construction of the tea room, which was a temporary erection at the rear of the building. It was, moreover, very artistically decorated and furnished and, consequently, proved a most popular re-sort for old and young, whose requirements there were attended to by Meßdames Dagg and J. W. Fraser and Misses Joss and Hamilton.

During the evening patrons were entertained with a programme of good music and recitations by various ladies and gentlemen, the following being the items given Vocal duet, "Awake," (Pelissier) Mrs Mussen and Miss Keid ; pianoforte solo, Miss Ware ; vocal duet, "In the Dusk of the Twilight,'' Mrs Mussen and Miss N. Douglas; pianoforte solo, " The Shepherd's Evening Song," Miss Ware ; recitation " Midshipmite," Mr A. J. Thompson ; song, "You'll never miss the water till the well runs dry," Miss Jessie Dagg; ditto " Within a Mile of Edinboro' Toon," Mrs Mussen; recitation, "Baby in Church, Miss Jessie Kennedy.
