POSTAL REDUCTIONS.

MONEY ORDER AND TELEGRAPH CONCESSIONS.

At the request of some of our readers and for the information of the public generally, we reproduce the following article detailing the postal reductions brought into operation at the beginning of the year: — Some important reductions in postal rates are officially announced. Henceforth postage on post cards for delivery within New Z-aland will be Jd each, and for reply cards Id. On and after January Ist, 1908, the rates for letters and letter cards for delivery within New Zealand will be Id for the first four ounces and id for each additional two or fraction thereof. For magazines registered for transmission by post as such the postage will be one penny for each sixteen ounces or fraction thereof. The fee for registering letters for all places is reduced to two-pence. The commission on money orders and postal notes has also been reducod as follows :—On postal notes of the following denominations—ls, Is 61 and 2s 61, the poundage will be one halfpenny : 3s and ss, one penny ; 10s, 15a and 20s, two-pence. On money orders is sued for payment within New Zealand the commission is to be reduced to three pence for each £5 or fraction of £5, and orders for the United Kingdom, United States of America, British possessions, etc., threepence for each £1 or fraction of £l. On the telegraph side the free delivery of telegrams at chief offices and first and second grade telegraph offices is extended to two miles; hitherto the limit has been one mile. For delivery over two miles up to three miles a charge of 6d will be made. Over three miles the charges will be as at present. Now that these changes are in operation New Zealand will more than hold her own in the matter of cheap postal and telegraphic facilities.

The following reduced rates of postage came into operation on Ist January : Postage : luland, Id for the first 4o:s or fraction thereof, and id for each succeedine la or fraction thereof. Postcards : Tuland, single id, reply Id ; all other places (Postal Uuion rates'), single Id, reply 2d. Magazines (registered): Inlaud, each copy not exceeding 16rz, Id; every additional 16oz, or fraction thereof, Id; Australia (except Queensland and West Australia) each copy not exceeding 2oz, ljd; if over 2oz to Boz Id, every additional 4oz or fraction thereof, \\\ ; Queensland, West Australia, and all other places not otherwise specified, M for 2>z or fraction thereof. The registration fee on letters has also been reduced from 3d to 2d for all places.
