Tho Cambridge correspondent of the Auckland 'Star' writes: "A little time since 1 noticed a paragraph in your paper calling attention to the fact that a swarm of bees had settled on a veran-dah-post somewhere in the hood of Auckland. At the timo I thought it strange that such an occurrence was recorded, for here it is a somewhat common thing to see swarms hanging around; indeed, no less than five have located themselves on various parts of verandahs in Duke Street of i this town during the past few months. Yesterday a swarm appeared in that street, and they would not bo contented with verandahs. A horse and tiap, the property of Mr A. J. Edmunds, solicitor, was fastened up to the verandah post opposite his office, and it evidently took the eye of the queen bee, for she settled on the step of the trap, and in a few seconds the horse was enveloped in bees. Tho animal stood tho ordeal very well for a time, but as the bees began to crawl over its legs it began to apply its tail in brushing them ofr. Fearing tho animal would get stung, some of the onlookers quietly removed the horse from the shafts, and then the bees settled on the step, and were hived in due course by Mr A. Harris, grocer. It is few animals who would have stood such a test .successfully."

Andrew Anderson, a Russian Finn, years of age, was admitted to the Whangarei Hospital on Saturday last, after meeting with a startling mishap, and escaping with remarkable freedom from serious injury. Anderson was engaged in cutting flax on a headland about six miles from Ngunguru Heads, on Friday last (says the 'Northern Advocate), and was so absorbed in his work that he failed to notice his dangerous proximity to the edge of the cliff. A stop backward, and ho suddenly fell through 30 or 40 feet of space on to the rocks below. Here lie lay in a state of unconsciousness for some time, until Captain G. Carey, who happened to be sailing up the coast in the Tukua, noticed the prostrate form and put inshore. The sufferer, who had then como to his senses, was taken carefully aboard and brought up to Whangarei. At the hospital it was found that he had marvellously missed breaking any bones, though he was severely cut about and extensively bruised. We learn that he is now making good progress towards recovery, and is likely to be about again in a short time.
