THE POPE AND HIS GUARDS.
Pius X. is seriously considering the question of abolishing the Noble Guard, from motives of econoim and if its services are retained, which is extremely doubtful, it will only be in consideration of its members consenting to give their services free. At present the rank and file receive right shillings a day, while the stipends of the olliccrs are correspondingly large. As even the privates are all men of birth and aflluence, they really have no need of the pay. and could readily an'ord to dispense with it. thus relieving the Vatican of the reproach sometimes made by illnutured people in' spending the money freely given by the faithful for the needs of the Pontiff and of the Church upon well-to-do Roman nobles, whose duties are merely ornamental.
