CRICKET.

CRICKETERS v. BOWLERS. The cricket season was auspiciously opened last Wednesday when teams representing above faced each other on the pitch on the recreation ground. The match was looked forward to with much interest from the time it was arranged and it was thought, in view of it being the first game of the season, that there would be very little difference in the merits of both teams. This assumption proved to be sadly out as will be seen by the scores. The cricketers went to the wickets first and much to the joy of the bowlers, were disposed of for 40 runs.] |This was considered a small score and the bowlers went to the wickets with fond hopes of wiping it oft. Yet, in spite of themselves the inevitable "procession" came, and with the exception of the first two batsmen, was repeated in the second innings—the total score then only comiug within 8 of the 40. In their apparent anxiety to score it will be noticed that the bowlers lost five wickets by run-outs. Want of practice was very noticeable on both sides, and no small amusement was caused by the antics of some of the players. Notwithstanding all this the match fulfilled its object in a manner which must have been highly satisfactory to the cricket club. The amount of enthusiasm which showed itself throughout may be taken, it is hoped, as a criterion of a successful season. Gardiner captained the cricketers and Gavin the bowlers. .\Cbeers were exchanged between each side at the conclusion of the game. Following are the
