Back from the wars at last 1 Safe from the cannon's blast, Safe from the leaden rain. For these their country's praise, For these Victor's bays,— Back from the wars -again. 3. But some may fight no more, For they are wounded sore Or racked by fever's pain. For these their country's care; Honour and scars they bear Back from the wars again < 4. And hearts are aching here, And falls the widow's tear, Who waits and weeps in vain For in a distant grave Sleeps many a soldier brave, Who oomes not back again. 6. Sleep well! their country's pride, Who for the Empire died On Afric hill and plain. Australians, honour those Who fell with face to foes, And come not back again. a. But welcome those who come With trumpet-sound and drum Across the rolling main. Australia's patriot sons, Safe from the Boer guns, Back from the wars again !
