A BOOKKEEPING TYPE-WRITER.

The latest improvement in the typewriter is a machine which can be used to do bookkeeping. This is a most important improvement, as the typewriter has hitherto been unavailable for one of the chief occupations in a business office. This machine is called " the book type-writer." The keyboard is similar in form to that of other machines, but the letters are arranged to strike underneath. Beneath the keyboard there is a large iron framework into which the book is placed. This can be screwed up so that a book of any size will be held firmly and kept Hat. In spite of the different arrangement of this and the ordinary machines, the keyboard can be lifted up and the writing looked at while the work is still going on. An essential difference between this machine and the others is that the printing apparatus moves down the page instead of the sheet moving on a roller. The book typewriter is probably destined to play a great part in business work in future. The old-fashioned bookkeeper wearing his eyes out making copper-plate figures in his ledger will become a thing of the past. All this work will be done by the new typewriter. When all ordinary arithmetical calculations and all bookkeeping are done by machine, which will soon be the case, two of the most laborious and disagreeable of human occupations will be done away with. The new-machine is also*useful in taking manifold copies. It makes fifteen clear copies at a time.
