MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The Finance Committee of above body met in the Library buildings on Thursday January 4th at 7.30 p.m. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Cr Gavin, who went through the December accounts amounting to £63 7s lOd which they recommended to Council to pass as correct on the motion of Cr Gavin, seconded by His Worship the Mayor. A vote of thanks closed the meeting.
A special meeting of the Council was then held to consider the fixing of the day on which all shops within the borough were to be closed for the weekly half-holiday. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Gavin, Timpany, M'Donald and Haines. It was resolved on the motion of Crs Gavin and Haines that Wednesday in each week shall be the day fixed under section 9 of "The Shops and Shop Assistants Act, 1894," on which all shops within this Borough shall be closed during the year 1900 in the afternoon at the hour of one o'clock, provided there was no public holiday during that week. Resolved on the motion of Crs Haines and M'Donald That the resolution re half-holiday be confirmed at a special meeting to be called for Tuesday February 6th, 1900. The usual courtesy to the chair terminated the meeting.
The ordinary monthly meeting of Council was then opened. Presentsame as at special meeting. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : A letter from Cr M'Neil asking for leave of absence from the meeting was read and leave granted. A communication from the Southland H. and C. A. Board re contribution for quarter ending 31st of March 1900, was received aud it was resolved that same be paid. A letter from J. and R. Scott, engineers, Dunedin, intimating that they had forwarded the sluice valve ordered by Council, was received. An application from Morgan O'Meara for the position of dog tax collector was received. Resolved, on the motion of Crs M'Donald and Timpany, that Morgan O'Meara's application for the year ending 31st December, 1900, be granted at a remuneration of £lO, payable in advance, after he had paid the £4O auctioneer's license. Thomas Bell, Inspector of Nuisances, wrote, informing the Council that he was now in a position to prove the case, which he had previously lost against Julius Wenkheim in the Magistrate's Court, for depositing rubbish on the foreshore of the lake.
Resolved that Council take no further steps in the matter. The dayman's report re Mrs Manders' water supply was then read and it was resolved, on the motion of Crs Timpany and Gavin, that Mrs Manders be allowed to engage a duly appointed plumber at her own expense to tap the main pipe in Sydney street, and to lead from there a service pipe to her section 4, block 37, Queenstown, towards which Council allows her £2 on the dayman's certificate that the work has been done on the satisfaction of the Council.
A telegram from the ' Press' Company, Christchurch, asking Council's views re fund for more volunteers for the Transvaal was read. Resolved that Council leave the matter in the hands of the Government.
Tenders for lamplighting, carting, etc., were received from Daniel Price, Margaret Keay and Charles Shore. Resolved that a special meeting of Council, to consider tenders, be called for Tuesday, the 9th inst., at the Town Clerk's office at 8 p.m., as so few councillors were present. Accounts and salaries amounting to £63 7s lOd were passed for payment.
The Clerk announced a debit balance of £292 6s 2d. , , , A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
The special meeting called for Tuesday 9th January to consider tenders for lamplighting, etc., was held at Mr Geisows offices on that day at 8 p.m. Present His Worship the Mayor and Crs Haines, Monson, Dagg, Gavin and M'Donald. The tender of C. Shaw for £39 15s was accepted. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
