BAND NOTES.
(Br Crotchet. )
Mr W. S. King of Oamans secured the fcigbeat number of votes from the competing basdi for the position of judge of the contest. I think that the committee should be Slesttd with the result of the election, as Ir King has a wide reputation of being a clever musician, and he has been connected with bran bands for many years, chiefly with the Oamaru Garrison which he has conducted on several occasions, and which is veil knows to be one of the first-class bands of the colonies, having on several occasions gained premier poeition. Mr King, moreover, is the champion trombone player of N.Z. Trombone aoloists look out! I conaider, under these favorable circumstances that it will he quite safe to say when the •ambers go up that we shall find the bands arranged according to their merits. The local soloista are practising regularly And I expect to see some of them to the fore St the finish, especially the basses. I understand that a good number of entriea are expected for all the solo competitions.
A oiec stretch of ground has been pre pared along the centre of the recreation metre for the marching competition. The Railway Department have been commuicated with re cheap fares in connection with the contest, and if as liberal coacessions arc made m heretofore no doubt a number of people will avail themselves of the opportunity ef killing two birds with on* stone, via: attending the contest and seeing our beautiful town and surroundings. There was a large attendance last week at (he opera carnival at Fort Chalmers in aid of funds of the band. In addition to their ether pieces t te band rendered the selections decided upon for the coming contest at Queens to wd. "Musicus"intheGore 'Standard' says that a band is being formed at Tahakopa, in the Catline district As the contest next year will probably be held in Milton, which will be a oonvenient distance from Catlins, we hope to hear of this band on that occasion.
Tfee Gore band intend playing the contest out for the first time on Tuesday .aext ait a concert at Otaina. Conductor has evidently been working up his for the short time he has been in charge. Queens town will have to wake up. I take it as a bad sign that they have not played the test selection in public yet. What's the ■utter boys ?
