HOVEL AND EXCITING.
A novel contest took place some time au'u between a strong swimmer mil it well-known aiighr. It is described as occurring in a pool ciU feet long and -0 feet wide. The antler was furnished with an eleven foot trolling rod and an undressed silk line The line was filed to a girlh belt— made expressly for the purpose—by a .swivel immediately between the shoulders ol the swimmer at the point where he had the greatest pulling power. In the first trial the line snapped. In the su-ond the angler gave and played without altogether slacking line, and si feral porpoise dirts were well handled The iwimmer then tried eros«-swimming, from corner to corner, but ultimately was beaten, the match ending with a victory for the roil and line. Another contest took place, in which the angler employed a *ery light trout rod, ten ieet long, and weighing only six and a half ounces the line neing the same as that used with the trolling rod. 1 he swimmer, whose aim evidently was to smash the rod. pulled and leaped in the water. He wa.i held steadily, however, and in about five minutes was forced to give in, the rod was agai» successful At the finish both cortipetitors wt rr exhausted.
