HE DID NOT GET IT.
The old adage, "There's many a slip 'twixi the tup ami the lip.'' is ouee more exemplified in the following:— There once prevailed iu a certain town an old custom of giving a clock to any person who would truthfully swear he had minded his own business alone for a year and a day. and had not meddled with bis neighbor's. Many put in a claim, but few, if any. gained the prize, which was more difficult to win than the .anions Dnnmow flitch of bacon. Though they swore on the four gospels, sonic little hitch was sure to be found somewhere: and for all their assertions the clock remained stationary on its shelf, no one being able to prove his absolute immunity from interference in filing* not. In any way concerning himself. At last a young man came with a \.crfe(<tiy clean record, and the clock seemed as if it were about to change owners. Then remarked the custodian: "Oh, a s*oung man w;is here on Wednesday, aed he made pretty sine that he wa« going to win the clock, but he missed.*' Said the prize-seeker—-"And why didn't lie get it'.' - ' •• What's that to you?" snapped the other: "that's not your business, and—von don't r-ct the clock;"
