The Northumberland's crew i got ashore by means of a rocket line from the beach, j Captain Setter, of the Boojum, has been picked up, i but is not expected to live. The Northumberald is fast breaking up, and her cargo strews the beach for | miles. News is just received that a large crowd was broaching the spirits, many being blind drunk, only one policeman is there and he is utterly powerless, he called upon a party of respectable citi/ens to aid ! him, but they were sat upon by the drinking j rogues. The loss will be about £IOO,OOO. | Fifty officers in the Public Works Department have received notice that their services wil be dis--1 pensed with at the end of .September. The Representation Bill is first on the Order i Paper for Friday. Nothing of great importance was done in the I House last evening. I The position of Government is very insecure, and ; there is said to be a strained feeling between Vogel | and Stout. Sir Julius Vogel, in replying to a question last J night, said the reduction of the number ot members | of the House to 75 was impossible, as that number could not give a due proportion to each Island. (FROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER.) T his Day, 11.30 a.m. The Budget is very generally condemned, and several of the items of the tariff are suie to meet, with strong opposition. A majority of the House is, however, determined to dispose of the Representation Bill before debating the Financial Statement, the discussion on which is certain to be very lengthy. All sorts of rumours are in circulation as to the probable attitude of the Opposition, but there seems to be a general concessus of opinion that no I direct hostile vote will be moved. It is said efforts j will be marie to strike out the Defence vote and to 1 reduce the Education vote, but as these are rumours ' I give them for what they are worth. Pending the I return of Major Atkinson from Nelson, no definite ; course of action has been determined on. The Minister for Lands is of opinion that the j number of members ot Waste Land Boards should | be reduced, and that sittings should be held j monthly instead of fortnightly, wth a view to j reducing expenses, he will communicate this view j to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. The Representation question comes up again to- j morrow, and strong efforts will be made to push it ; through committee. I am assured to-night that an absolute majority i are pledged to retain the reduction to 71 members, I and to insist on the 20 per cent, concession in j favor of country districts. Indications point to an early dissolution of j Parliament, but as it is the unexpected that often j happens in politics, the Ministry may succeed in i weathering the stonn, ■
