ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

(TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE LAKE WAKATIP MAIL.) Sir,—Knowing your readiness at all times to open your columns to ventilate a greivance or expose an abuse, I would draw your attention to an abuse of the postal regulations, or what I think is an abuse of them. I refer to the manner in which the Skippers and Maori Point mails are carried. I understand the mails for those places are made up on Sunday night at five o'clock, and delivered to the contractor or his packers.- They are then carried out to Arthur's Point and left in a very insecure place, without any responsible person in charge, till the following morning, when they are taken up to their destination with other goods. The abuse I complain of is—What guarantee have the public that those letters may not he tampered with while lying there, or that they may not be destroyed in the event of a fire taking place during the absence of the men from the hut? I have always understood that mails when delivered to a mail contractor should be taken straight to its destination ; but iu this case it seems to be simply a matter of convcuitnce to suit the packing business of the contractor. If the mails can lie to Arthur's Point for so many hours, why not keep the mail open at Queenstown till Monday morning and allow letters to be posted up to a later hour, thereby affording a convenience to the public and keeping the mail in trustworthy hands, doing away with the risk of loss by fire or otherwise. Hoping that this state cf affairs may be altered iu the meantime, I remain, As Objector.
