Dcnedin, Thursday, 7th instant, 8 p.m. Mr James Mills was returned unopposed for Port Chalmers yesterday.
At yesterday's meeting, the President approved of the introduction of the organ in the First Church, but A. C. Begg protested, and matter was referred to Synod. Mr Richardson, Minister for Public Works, intends, if possible, to visit Otago to iuspect progress made on the Otago Central Railway. At a conference on tho Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act, held at the Town Hall last evening, a resolution w.is passed to the effect that the Act should be so amended tint the burden of supporting the poor should be more equally divided; an lin another resolution it was suggested that all property owned l>y persons receiving cbiritible aid should immediately be vested in the relieving !>ody.
