AN INTELLIGENT RECRUIT.
Oar army possesses just now at least one recruit of more than ordinary intelligence. The Tommy Atkins in question was being instructed in the duties involved in keeping guard as a sentry, and the instructor, having laid down certain broad principles for his guidance, began to catechise bis pupil aa to hii course of action in particular cases.
" Well," he began, " and what would you do if you saw a general officer going by when you were on guard ? " w Why, I should present arms, of course !" returned the recruit.
" Quite so; and suppose you saw a party of drunken men in uniform going by, what would you do then ? " was the query. "Why, I should present arms again," said Tommy Atkins. u Present arms! And why the devil would you do thut, sir ? " Bhouted the enraged drill-sergeant. " Why, becsuse for all 1 could tell, there might be a general officer among them!" returned the recruit triumphantly. No more questions were asked him that day.
