CLOTHES-PINS.
I must tell a story of a Dubuque man never told before, Passing through the back yard of big Locust Street residence, he observed a servant hanging out articles of small clothes, and fastening them with the familiar clothrs-pin. After watching the operation a short time, he went up to the girl and enquired if she couldn't make them split sticks stay on the line without putting clothes under them. He took some of the pins from the girl, , and, holding the line steady with his left hand, he soon sat a dozen pins astride of it in good shape, and then stepped back to let the girl see for herself how little she knew, wben 10, and behold, his split sticks were all hanging fast to the line, but with beads downward. " Oh, yes, I see," said he, " you put the rags on the lice to keep the sticks from keeling over," and he walked away talking to himself about the eitravagance of buying kindling wood with a handle turned on every stick, and then having to be hung up on a string to dry before being used.
