Dcnedin, this day, 10 a.m. A heavy thunderstorm and rain were experienced in Grey town yesterday afternoon. Mr Norman, city engineer, Mr Hay, engineer, and Mr Cuthbert, engineer, at Christchurch, before rain came on were in High*street sewer, and swept down it by the heavy fall of water and narrowly escaped being drowned. They managed to reach a man-hole with difficulty. The Timet has a leader recommending Mr James Mills for the Port Chalmers seat (held by the late Mr Macandrew), and hopes he will get in unopposed. Hanlan, the oarsman, is going to visit Australia in August. Government has informed the Wellington Corporation that they are responsible for losses on the total amount of damages done by the late fire. The alleged ground is not made public, but it is to be tested. The total losses are over £160,000, which are only covered by insurance to the amount of £63,850. LATER. The result of the race for the Australian Cup, run on Thursday, is Trident, Ist; Nelson, 2; Allgold, 3. Won by a head. The Mayor is to give a dinner to the Governor on 9th instant. At the Rifle Association meeting, Christchurch, the citizens only subscribed £63 towards ttie local prizes. Great dissatisfaction is also expressed at the way marksmen are being treated by Christchurch citizens as compared to other towns, The following are the highest aggregates so far:—RiflesWhite, 238 ; Guy, Temuka, 233; Johnson, Clutha, 227 ; and Foster, 225. Carbines—Parslow, 235 ; Webster, 234 ; Mahoney, 227 ; Woolley, 224; and Howe, 222. At a large representative meeting held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon to form arrangements for memorial to the late Mr Macandrew, the following resolutions were adopted : —" That this meeting deplore the loss sustained by the colony in the sudden removal by death of Mr James Macandrew, and offers its heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family." "That the noble and disinterested efforts of Mr Macandrew in promoting the welfare of the colony, call for a public memorial to his memory." After considerable discussion, it was also resolved that a University scholarship be founded, and a statue built to his memory. A strong committee has been formed, including Mr Leary (Mayor), chairman, Mr J. Daire, treasurer, Mr J. L. Gillies, hon. secy, and Mr D. Harris Hastings, paid secretary. At a special meeting of the Land Board yesterday, in re perpetual leases and deferred-payments, the arrears of rent in each case was dealt with on its merits. In eleven cases time was given until 21st April; in two other cases until 31st inst., and in one case the time allowed was four weeks. Be perpetual lease arrears, the Board ordered that nine of lessees receive notice either to pay within one month or surrender their leases. Seven others were allowed uutil 21st April. As regards deferredpayment leases, power is given to Board to re-hear any cases and rescind any resolution within thirty days. A new white terrace has been discovered in Waiorupa Valley, North Island, 16 miles from Rotorua. STAR CABLEGRAMS. London, March 1. The wool market continues firm. The total arrivals for next sales amount to 12,000 bales. In the House of Commons Mr George Howell brought forward a distinct charge of corrupt expenditure in the part of the Corporation of London. Several startling disclosures were made, and it was asserted that the sum of £20,000 was spent in hiring audiences and feeing speakers against the London Government Bill. Sir A. B. Fowler (ex-Lord Mayor) courted a full inquiry into the question, whilst Mr H. Labouehere and Mr Charles Bradlaugh stated that they were prepared to prove the allegations. There has been a serious Native rising at Mozambique, and the British stations are threatened. The revolution in Bulgaria is assuming serious aspects.
