+ (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, this day, 1 p.m. About 100 men left Melltourne yesterday engaged to take the places of wharf labourer* on strike here. Mr Henderson Carrick, a well-known and respected citizen died very suddenly yesterday. There is a likelihood of a company being formed to work the Island block for gold. Mr Dan ling mining engineer, is to make a preliminary survey. Customs returns for past quarter show able falling off in spirits, tobacco and cigars, wines 'excepting Australian), coffee, cocoa, sugar and goods bv weight, hut an improvement in Australian wines, beer, tea, opium and ad valorem poods and miscellaneous. The total duties for quarter amount to £3700 less than previous year. Customs receipts for the year 1885, amounted to £1,408,809, as against £1,413.393 for 1884. The Registrar General reports the population of chief cities for January, 1886, Auckland, 28,918 ; Wellington, 23.240; Christehurch, 16,541 ; and Dunedin, 15.147. The balance of immigration over emigration for the year 1885, was in favor of the colony by 40,504 jarsons. The other Australian colonies also exhibit a small balance in their favor as against New Zealand. The telegram from Sydney, re Cardinal Moran having left for Auckland, was a mistake. The Cardinal proceeds, as arranged, via Melbourne, reaching Bluff February Bth. There is a general impression that a dissolution of Parliament will take place before session.
