Agricultural Items.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) After a spell of fine warm weather the old abomination of wet and cold has come upon us again, and things begin to look realy serious. In many fields the wheat—in spite of the many drawbacks—has ripened sufficiently to be cut, but the weather is in such an unsettled state, that the farmers hesitate to make a start for fear of having the grain spoiled after cutting. Mr Jas. Reid, near Arrowtown, has however, commenced to cut the ripest of his wheat in order to save it from the birds, which flocked to it in great numbers. Strong winds also continue to sweep over the district, but, although they are cold, they have a certain drying effect which is more beneficial than hurtful, and fortunately they have of late not been so severe as to lay the crops. Taking things altogether I regret to say it cannot be said that the agricultural outlook for the district is a bright one. The crops on Arrow Flat and at the Junction are ripening wonderfully well notwithstanding that the weather is by no means hot, Mr James Reid began cutting some wheat on Tuesday, and would have began on Monday if the day had been fine. It is a crop, although somewhat lighter in the ear than those of previous years, Mr R. Campbell's Crop, although one of the heaviest in the district, will be about the first to be ready for the machine, owing to its favorable situation. He commenced to reap on T! ursday. The crops on Crown Terrace (except very small patches) continue us green as a leek.
