MUNIPAL COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of above body was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. Present—The Mayor and Crs Malaghan, Hotop, Boyne* Brettell, Howell and Pasco. Minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence consisted of a letter from Mr L. Deßeer, in reference to the bad state of Gorge road opposite his residence. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. Cr Boyne thought it advisable that something should be done with the crane on the public jetty, as it was of no use where it was. Cr Malaghan agreed. He thought it was a public nuisance, and proposed that the Public Works Committee be requested to remove same. Seconded by Cr Rowel 1 and carried. Cr Boyne also drew attention to the desirability of making some use of the reserves. There was the endowment at the Head of the Lake which might be let for, say 14 years, with improvement clauses* As to town endowments he did not know whether they were getting any rent from them or not. It was time something was done to let them either by auction or by tender, if possible. Cr Malaghan thought they might also let the Commonage. The Council wanted revenue, and they would have to go on with the waterworks shortly. The lands might be let so that the lessees would have to lay them down with grass the last year or two. The Alayor believed it would be a very good plan, and no doubt tho Council could get a very good revenue. After further discussion, It was proposed by Cr Boyne, seconded by Cr Pasco and carried—That a sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor, Crs Malaghan, Hotop and the mover, be appointed to consider the advisability of leasing endowments, and to bring up report on same at next ordinary meeting of the Council. (Cr Davidson here entered.) Attention was called to the dirty state of the streets, when Mr Curno (who was present) offered to keep them clean for six months at the rate of 30s per week. The offer was declined, and an order made that the Inspector get the work done by day labor at once. Accounts passed for payment were —Town Clerk, ill 19s 9d, and E. Burrows,4s 6d. An account from D. Sullivan for £7 19s 6d was ordered to stand over till next meeting. Mr D. P. Cash asked if the Council were going to pay amount of judgment for wages obtained by him in the R.M. Court out of money owing W. Maclarn for contract. The Mayor said Mr Cash would probably get his money sooner or later. In reply'to Cr Hotop, re back rates The Clerk spoke of certain defaulters, and asked who to summons first. Cr Boyne—You have already been instructed to proceed against every defaulter. The question or By-laws was brought up, when it was resolved on the motion of Crs Boyne and Hoton, that the Mayor, and Crs Davidson, Rowell, Malaghan, Pasco and the mover, be appointed to frame by-laws. The Mayor referred to the filthy state of the Town Creek, and it was ordered that the Inspector's attention be called to the nuisances. The Public Works Committee were requested to bring up a report at next meeting as to the best steps to be taken to render the Manure Depot secure from the effects of water. On the motion of Crs Malaghan and Rowell, it was resolved that a sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs Hotop, Boyne, Pasco, Brettell and the mover, be appointed to meet members of the Ministry, regarding matters affecting the welfare of the town.
