The census returns just puWished show a total population for the Provincial district of Canterbury jof 92,333, being an increase since 1874 of 33,658. Christchurch city proper has a population of 13,408, being an increase of 3114; Lyttleton, 3476, or an increase of 502; Timaru, 3382, or an increase of 1413. The population of Christchurch and suburbs is estimated at 30,300. . _. . With reference to the land tax in Victoria we see that an analysis of its classification has been gazetted, from which it appears that the estates dealt with so far numbered 341, with an area of 3,046!347 acres, and a taxable value of £5,409,168. The annual value of the tax is set down at £67,614 12s; an average of s£d per acre. Over 100 appeals were lodged against the classification. There are four classes of land, and of the 341 estates there are classified under the first class 58, area 267,275 acres ; second class 81, area 516,300 acres ; third class 133, area 1,300,896 acres; fourth class 69, area 961,876 acres. The highest amount of land tax pavable yearly on any one estate is i3,!03 16s, the lowest 7s 6d. The average per acre is about s£d. A large number of classifications have sitll to be gazetted.—Evening Star,
