A Gazette notice further prorogues the General Assembly from the 23rd inst., to the 13th of June. That unfortunate loan which Mr Larnach, Minister for Public Works, has been commissioned to negotiate in the Home market (if he can) will have a good deal to answer for on its own account proper, and we are afraid also for deficiencies in other departments of the public service. In the meantime Government have notified by circular to all tenderers for public works that in consequence of the threatening attitude of European affairs they are not prepared to assume larger liabilities than is absolutely necessary, and postpone accepting any more tendeis for public works until more satisfactory intelligence is received from London relative to financial matters, and the probability of floating the new loan. It is stated that £150,000 worth of works have thus been stopped. Mr Bodkin announces in another column that he has just received a supply of watches from the Home country made specially to order. We have inspected the goods which appear to be of excellent workmanship and well finished. The local name on them will also render them a fitting memento of the City of the Lakes.
