OUR VOLUNTEERS.

The return match between the Queenstown and Arrow Companies took place at the latter Company's butts on Saturday last, the 16th instant. The number of men chosen to represent each Corps was 10, but on arrival at Arrowtown of the Queenstown team it was ascertained that one of their number had absented himsfe f without, we hear, giving any notice of his intention to do so either to Captain Finn or the Lieutenants of his Company. The hitch thus created was not only annoying to our local men —who were, of course, unable to supply the deficiency by substituting another good shot—but it was also a disappointment to the Arrow team who were prepared with the full complement. The distances were 200, 400 and 500 yardsseven shots at each range. The match commenced at one o'clock and terminated at about six. A strong wind was blowing from the right during the time. At the 200 yards range the Arrow men led with two points, and had increased their distance to 10 points at the conclusion of the firing at the 400 yards ; but at the 'SOO yards it will be noticed that the Queenstown men gradually forged ahead and landed themselves the victors by 26 points. The utmost good feelin&.and cordiality prevailed on both sides throughout* Bandsman Vause was the highest scorer on the Queenstown side with 68 points, and Sergeant Brown on behalf of the Arrow Company with 62 points—the general average per man for the whole competition being :—Queenstown, 54^; Arrowtown, 51 £. The Arrow Company provided a sumptuous --,~Dread—served by mine hos,t of the New fcPMeans Hotel—and which was done ample justice to by all present. As each Company has won a match this season, we believe it is the intention to fire the conqueror on St. Patrick's day, at the Queenstown butts, when we hope that as hearty a welcome will be extended towards the visitors as was given to the Queenstown men on Saturday last. Appended are the scores : Arrow.
