The Prince of Wales' Birthday is close upon us, and we sincerely hope that the Oddfellows will have fine weather on that day for their annual pic-nic to the Greenstone. This day week the Dart Hundred will be thrown open, to a limited extent, for settlement under the deferred-payment clauses of the Land Act. The sections open for selection will be found advertised elsewhere. The remainder of the Hundred is withdrawn from sale, the survey not having been completed. Applications can be. made at any laud office in the united Pro> vince; but must "be made by the applicant in person. On the 10th inst., at the Survey Office, Queenstown, Messrs M'Ardell and Co. will oiler for sale the right of lease over two runs, withdrawn previously in consequence of conditions of sale not having arrived in time. On the 21st December, sales of unsold town lands in Frankton, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Kingston, snd Jamestown will take place. Captain Heywood, commanding the Southland District Volunteers, inspected the Volunteer and Cadet Corps on Monday evening. The volunteers mustered well, considering the large number of young men who have lately left the town. As he intends inspecting every month, there is a prospect of the corps improving in attendance and drill. The cadets, of whom 38 were inspected, received great praise. They were put through front and rear company formation, and squad drill. Captain Macklin intends having them so far advanced at next inspection as manual, platoon, and skirmishing drill. We believe that cloth will be immediately issued for uniforms. Of the volunteer officers there were present-.—Captain Malaghan, Lieut. Wortliington, and Sub-Lieutenant Powell. Lieutenant Worthington proved the company by the new drill. Of the cadet officers, there were present Captain Macklin and Lieutenants Ross and W. Worthington. We cengratulate the town on the possession of a Cadet Corps numbering fifty members, and are also glad of the revival of the Volunteer Corps. The following is copy of a letter, respecting the Commonage grievance, which has been kindly placed at our disposal by the recipientTo W. L. Foster, Esq, Moke Creek.—Clyde, Oct. 14.—Sib,—The Secretary of the Goldfields forwarded to me your letter respecting the boundaries of the commonage. I cannot trust ray memory to give you the exact boundaries, without the aid of a map; but I am sure the officer in charge of the Survey Department in Queenstown will be happy to oblige you in the matter. With regard to sheep running over the commonage, I hope that will be rectified immediately. The Government purpose making some changes, and the commonage will then be properly utilised. —I have, &c., A. R. B. Ihomson, Inspector." Smith's Combination Troupe will give a performance in the Town Hall to-morrow, and two or three nights after, we believe. If this Company is anything as complete as when it arrived in Auckland, or was at Wellington, a rich treat is in store for the people of this district. We need not repeat the encomiums passed upon the Company elsewhere; but Mr Smith's name is a sufficient guarantee of its excellence, and it ought to prove the best of the companys that have visited this district. Mr Smith, as one of our old Australian caterers for public amusement —and a good judge ot them into the bargain—managed to bring together the Company we refer to. It is a varied, but powerful one, each member being superior in his special line.
