To the Editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail. Sir, —The gross personal attack made upon me in your issue of t>day, under the signature of P. D., obliges me to say a few words with regard to public matters, my view of which it pleases your nameless correspondent to vilify. The report of the proceedings of the Hospital Committee on the Ist inst., I assert to be perfectly correct, and contains nothing which did not take place in my presence and hearing; the public are the best judges of what is of importance or otherwise, in the proceedings of a Board sitting with open doors, and it is the reporter's duty to lay the whole facts before them. The manner which the success of Dr. Pelley was achieved at the late election was patent at the time, and is owned to without compunction by his supporters; not a single penny was expended on behalf of Dr. Douglas, and so far from the Arrow rushing over to vote for that gentleman, some of Dr. Pelley's warmest supporters came from that Township. The general scurrility of P. D's. letter, Mr Editor, needs no remark from me, it is its own best answer and refutation. I will only say that I think P. B. would have been a more appropriate signature. That individual may rest assured that no consideration of persons, no fear of anonymous slang will ever deter me from speaking the truth plainly and unreservedly in the paper I have the honor to represent. I remain, Sir, your obedient servant, The Correspondent of the " Times." Arrow, Nov. 25,1863. [The writer of the above seems to have forgotten the rule usual with all newspapers—viz., to enclose his name; but as he wishes to justify himself we overlook this omission.—Ed. W. M.]
