QUEENSTOWN IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE.
A meeting was held on Thursday evening. Present—Messrs. Carey, (chairman) Cass, Budd, Harris, Angus, Gordon, Bracken and Weaver. The minutes of last meeting were" read and confirmed. The secretary read the following letter:— Provincial Secretary's office, Dunedin, 18th Nov k , 1863. Sir—With reference to my letter of the 12th instant, No. 2612,1 have now the honor to enclose a copy of a communication which I have received from the Acting Secretary to the Chief Marine Board, relative to the navigation of Lake Wakatip, the contents of which I trust will be satisfactory to the Queenstown Progress Committee.—l have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient Servant, Thomas Dick, Provincial Secretary. B. Cass, Esq., Honorary Secretary to the Queenstown Progress Committee. Chief Marine Board office, Port Chalmers, 14th Nov. 1863. SIR—I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 13th instant enclosing copy of minutes of the Queenstown Improvement Committee, thv; opinion of the Provincial Solicitor, with a copy of the " Waterman* Licensing Ordinance, 1863," and requesting me to assist the Harbor Master in drawing up rules and regulations for the better guidance of steam vessels and other craft plying on the Lake Wakatip and have to state, that I shall be very glad to render all assistance in my power. I have seen Captain Thomson on this subject, and we have agreed that the Inspecting Engineer of steam vessels, Mr. E. Hamilton, shall proceed to the Lake immediately, and whilst examining the steamers shall make a report to us, as a guide in drawing up the above mentioned rules. Mr. Hamilton has been for some time on Lake Wakatip, and is well qualified to inspect the existing grievances and form an obinion for their redress.—l have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient Servant, ' Thomas Robertson, 1 Acting Secretary Chief Marine Board. The Provincial Secretary, Dunedin. An offer of Mr Slater, relative to the allotments at the head of Beach-street, recommended to be reserved as in the Hue of street, wrs not entertained. Considerable discussion took place relative to a late article in the Wakatip Mail, in which a member of the Committee was severely spoken of. -PrtoposecHryiifr Harris, seconded by Mr Weaver—"That the Government be requested to erect a public jetty, suitable for the safe landing of passengers and goods." Lost. Proposed by Mr Cass, seconded by Mr Bracken—"That tenders be called for building a temporary passenger bridge over the creek at the head of Beach-street. The following amendment was proposed by Mr Gordon and seconded by Mr Angus—"That a packer's bridge be erected at the top of Beach-street." Lost. The motion was carried. Subscriptions to the amount of £l 13s were handed to the Secretary, and the com" mittee adjourned.
