SUPPLY OF WOOD TO THE HOSPITAL.
To the Editor of the Lake Wjikatip Mail. Sib,—" Mr Henry Marshall Croft, hon. sec. pro tern. Wakatip Hospital," has been kind enough to comment upon my letter, but he has studiously refrained from touching on its real subject—contenting himself with detailing the former bungling of the Committee. I complained that £3 per cord was an excessive price, and he replied that it used to cost them £5 and £3 10s. by the roundabout way formerly adopted. I dare say, if they ordered their supply of wood from the fiush Creek, it would cost them £lO a cord, but that has nothing to do with the subject. Mr. Henry Marshall Croft and his co-committee-men are to blame if they did not take proper measures to keep their former contractors to their agreement. I do not impute any unworthy motives to Mr. Rees, but I insist on the practice, as a principle, of members of the committee not being allowed to hold contracts, especially without calling for tenders previously. It is contrary to all usage, and at least leaves an opportunity for the public to ascribe a meaning that may be erroneous and must be disagreeable to all parties concerned. Yours, &c, Frankton, Oct. 23,1863. Manuka.
